The SHE+ Foundation, formerly the Patty Brisben Foundation for Women’s Sexual Health, is a cause that is not only close to my heart, but vital for every woman - and for the partners that support them.
Women’s sexual health isn’t just about sex - it’s about quality of life. It is about prioritizing the needs of women, the experiences of women, and acting accordingly.
Far too many women endure years of pain and suffering from endometriosis, low libido, and more - without access to proper support or solutions.
Medical research on women’s health began in the 1980s. The National Institute of Health adopted a policy in 1986 that required women to be included in clinical research. (NIH, 2021)
Research on men’s health began with the first recorded clinical trial - in 562 BC. (Blatt, 2010)
The first major study of men's sexual health is widely considered to be the "Kinsey Report," specifically titled "Sexual Behavior in the Human Male," published in 1948 by Alfred Kinsey
Dr. Christine Vaccaro, member of the SHE+ Medical Advisory Board, recently did an interview with Cincinnati Magazine on our behalf. She said, “There is still so much research to be done, and so much to be learned. I wish everyone knew that women’s sexual health was just as important as men’s sexual health. The human clitoris has 10,000 nerve endings, which was only discovered last year (2023). The clitoral anatomy was first described correctly in 2005, and was not included in medical textbooks prior to that.”
We are centuries behind. And, it’s time for change.
Women deserve to be heard, empowered, and treated when it comes to their health.
Doctors need better education and research to understand our bodies. Time is up for dismissals, for saying “it’s normal, just take ibuprofen,” or prescribing a “glass of wine,” to loosen up for sex.
Women are at the helm of families and should be strong, healthy, and educated.
Women’s sexual health deserves the same progress and attention as any other aspect of healthcare.
It’s on us to support our mothers, our grandmothers, daughters, and future generations. And there is no better time than now to get involved, and support women’s sexual health.
